Standing By
addressing bullying through theatre

We’re pleased to announce that our long-standing workshop dealing with bullying is once again available to NS schools. Booking now for March & April, 2016

Standing By

Standing By is a hands-on workshop addressing bullying made for students in grades 4 – 6. In a classroom, three actors and a facilitator work with students, one class at a time, to create scenes of bullying drawn from their lives. They use improvisation, forum and image theatre. These scenes will be played through and will end not where anyone wants to see it – unresolved, often with the person bullying still in control. So we go back.

Through an interactive game, students will get to step into the scene and try out their strategies for positive change. The game is based on the idea that within the group lies all of the potential to solve problems. That given a supportive place to practice just how, those changes might be possible. The work illustrates that change is both possible and difficult. We create a safe space to try ideas. To put them in play without the inherent risks that happen in the real world. The learning that happens here can serve to create change out there. The workshop is created and facilitated by The Irondale Ensemble Project.

In situations of bullying, there are at least three roles that can describe the people involved; someone who is bullying, a person being bullied, and observers or bystanders. Bystanders make up approximately 80% of student populations. Standing By looks at bullying incidents in their entirety, but focuses on the bystanders.

Currently, the workshop is subsidized 50% by PERFORM! with the generous support of Telus Community Fund.
And mileage costs are covered too!
That means that you can book a 3-workshop day for your school for $255, or a 4-workshop day for $340! You can book multiple days for your school.

We are booking in the HRSB starting March 10th and in areas outside of HRM beginning April 1st.

Workshop and Cost Details:

The workshop is for students in grades 4-6, designed to be delivered to one class at a time with a recommended maximum of 30 students per workshop. A minimum of three (3) workshops in a day must be booked per school and the maximum possible workshops per day is four (4).

  • 3 Classrooms: $320.00
  • 4 Classrooms: $425.00
  • 6 Classrooms: $640.00
  • 8 Classrooms: $850.00

It is 45-50 minutes in length. One (1) hour time slots are blocked to allow for students to get in and out, and for the actors to catch their breath in between sessions.

Ideally, we do the workshop in an AV or multipurpose room, so that there’s just one set up, and then the student groups come to us. A classroom-size room. We have sometimes set up in libraries or music rooms. A gym is NOT a good space for this workshop.

FOR GRADES 2 – 4 (can be used up to Grade 6)
A No More Bullying Workshop

Make a Sound, Turn it Around

Make a Sound, Turn it Around is a workshop aimed at Grades 2-4 where students are asked how they can help someone being bullied.  This workshop takes place in the classroom setting.  With a facilitator/performer and two other performers, discussion is encouraged. This workshop helps to teach students different strategies to recognize and cope with bullying behavior.  Students will also learn how to go from being bystanders to being helpers.  It introduces easy to understand definitions of what bullying is and isn’t, and identifies the people involved in bullying situations (the person who is bullying, person being bullied, bystander).   Students will learn different ways to take action and stand up to bullying in a safe and respectful environment.

Students are invited to watch three short scenes depicting different types of bullying behavior (physical, social/exclusion and verbal).  Each scene includes a bully, a person being bullied and the bystander- someone watching what is happening but not taking action.

After each scene, students are asked what type of bullying behavior occurred in the scene, and brainstorm different ideas about what the bystander should do to help the person being bullied so that the bullying behavior is stopped.  The facilitator/actors then repeat the scenes using the students’ suggestions.  They can also invite students to step into the role of the bystander(s) and play the scene out with the other performers, to create different outcomes to the original scene.

Other topics covered include cyberbullying, Stand Up to Bullying Day, and where to go for help.  Students may also create their own improvised scenes to illustrate what they’ve learned in the workshop- how to make a sound, and turn it around!
