Ross Burns is a professional musician, performer, capoeira player, and teacher. Studying the guitar since a young age and training the Brazilian dance/martial art form capoeira seriously since 2003 Ross is becoming a familiar face on Canadian stages as a guitarist, percussionist, dancer and front man.
He is a four-time ECMA award winner with the gypsy-jazz outfit Gypsophilia; he heads Mestre Azeitona’s capoeira group Dendê do Recife in Halifax, as principle teacher, choreographer and performer; he is guitarist and background vocalist in roots-reggae band Verbal Warnin’ and one part of chamber-jazz quintet The New Bridge.
As a dancer Ross has performed in The Halifax Jazz Festival, Halifax and Yarmouth Multicultural Festivals, The Scotia Festival of Music, Brazilian Carnaval Halifax, Kinetic Studio Series and more. He has taught extensively in school and recreation programs all over Nova Scotia and as far afield as Ottawa, Ontario and Recife, Brazil.
Ross has collaboratorated with the likes of Shauntay Grant, David Myles, Dinuk Wijeratne, Suzi Leblanc, Duane Andrews, Erin Costelo, Rich Aucoin, Jeff Torbert, Matt Myer, Der Heisser, Cyndi Cain, Rômmel Ribeiro, Zumbi/Zumbini Circus and Balako do Samba.
